-- AUSTIN, TX — Los Angeles-based No Matter What Recovery (NMWR), a nationally recognized substance abuse and mental health treatment program that has helped revolutionize recovery for members of the LGBTQ+ community, is expanding to Austin, Texas. The organization will celebrate the opening of its newest location on Saturday, November 14, with educational workshops and a special community open house hosted by Phoenix of RuPaul’s Drag Race.

Founded by husbands, Anthony Arranaga-Grayson and Paulo Arranaga-Grayson, NMWR's new 4,700-square-foot, two-story treatment center is located at 1018 W. 11th Street in Austin's Clarksville neighborhood, near Lamar and 12th and just minutes from downtown. Designed specifically for LGBTQ+ individuals and their allies, the facility will provide comprehensive outpatient treatment for substance use disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. It will also serve as a gathering place for local recovery groups seeking space to hold meetings.

The center will offer a Partial Hospitalization Program weekdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., an Intensive Outpatient Program from 9 a.m. to noon and 6 pm to 9 pm, along with aftercare and alumni programming. Clients requiring inpatient treatment will also have access to NMWR's specialized LGBTQ+ services in Los Angeles through coordination between the two locations.

NMWR has earned national recognition for its LGBTQ+ focused approach to addiction and mental health treatment, particularly its work addressing chemsex, a practice involving the use of drugs to enhance and/or prolong sexual experiences. The pattern can create a particularly destructive cycle of substance dependency, compulsive sexual behavior, isolation and emotional distress.

The Austin center is unique to the LGBTQ+ community in Texas in that it will offer a specialized chemsex treatment program addressing sexualized substance use and the emotional and behavioral challenges that often accompany it. In particular, crystal meth abuse has negatively impacted the LGBTQ+ community, with a recent study finding that gays and lesbian use the drug more than three times that of heterosexuals. Treatment will explore intimacy in sobriety, compulsive sexual behaviors, unresolved trauma, shame, attachment issues and rebuilding healthy relationships. Several members of NMWR's clinical team hold Certified Sex Addiction Therapist credentials, providing specialized expertise in treating these complex and often misunderstood conditions.

Beyond chemsex recovery, the center will provide community-centered, trauma-informed care addressing challenges frequently experienced by LGBTQ+ individuals, including discrimination, family rejection, identity struggles and the psychological toll of social stigma. Treatment will incorporate evidence-based approaches such as Internal Family Systems, Somatic Experiencing and other trauma-focused therapies. Clients will also have access to psychiatric care, medication management and Medication-Assisted Treatment when clinically appropriate.

The grand opening festivities begin at 8 a.m. with two workshops led by Chief Clinical Officer, Jessica Steinman, LMFT, CSAT, and National Director of Chemsex and LGBTQ+ Programs, Mell McCracken, CADC II, ASAT, addressing chemsex recovery and sex and love addiction. The sessions will explore the challenges of rebuilding healthy sexual and emotional lives in recovery, with particular emphasis on intimacy, desire, consent, communication and trust without the use of substances.

Participants will gain a deeper understanding of chemsex, sex and love addiction, and patterns of sexual arousal, along with practical tools for developing individualized, sustainable recovery plans that reflect their own values and choices.

The day's activities will also include a special community open house from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m., hosted by Phoenix of RuPaul’s Drag Race. The public, particularly individuals and families affected by addiction and mental health challenges, is encouraged to attend, meet the NMWR team and learn more about its programs and services.

For founders Anthony and Paulo, both of whom have personally experienced the devastation of addiction and the transformative power of recovery, expanding access to treatment with a focus on the LGBTQ+ community remains a deeply personal mission.

“We know firsthand how devastating addiction can be, particularly for people who have spent much of their lives feeling judged, rejected or misunderstood,” says Anthony.

Added Paulo, “Our goal has always been to create a place where people can seek help without shame, receive the treatment they deserve and begin rebuilding their lives. We're thrilled to bring that mission to Austin.”

The expansion comes amid continuing concerns about the disproportionate rates of substance use and mental health challenges within the LGBTQ+ community. Research has shown that LGBTQ+ adults are more than twice as likely as their heterosexual peers to use illicit drugs and nearly twice as likely to experience a substance use disorder.

In Los Angeles, NMWR operates five sober living homes serving up to 40 clients and a six-bed detoxification facility. The organization expanded beyond Southern California earlier this year with the opening of its Chicago location.
