A Quality Garage Door (714-523-7900) has announced battery backup checks for garage door openers at rental properties across the Inland Empire, timed ahead of the Santa Ana wind and power shutoff season.

-- A Quality Garage Door, a family-owned Fullerton company operating since 1962, has announced battery backup checks for garage door openers at Inland Empire rental homes, timed ahead of Santa Ana wind and power shutoff season. Covered cities include Riverside, Ontario, Rancho Cucamonga, Upland, Eastvale, Corona, and Chino Hills, and property managers can book an entire portfolio with a single call.

The service targets managers of single-family rentals and buildings with one to four units, the same range California’s garage door statutes use to define a residence. The company cites HUD market analysis showing that roughly half of Riverside County renters, and 45% of those in San Bernardino County, live in single-family homes.
California’s SB 969 followed the 2017 wildfires, when at least five deaths were reportedly linked to garage doors that would not open without power. Since July 1, 2019, every residential opener sold or installed in the state must include a battery backup. In January 2025, Southern California Edison cut power to 363,196 customers across eight counties, including Riverside and San Bernardino, in what the utility later described as its largest and most complex shutoff on record.
During shutoffs like these, a backup only helps if its battery holds a charge, and A Quality Garage Door notes that backup batteries in residential openers generally last one to two years. With the first openers installed under SB 969 now over seven years old, the checks are designed to identify and replace batteries that have degraded past the point of reliable use.
“Most managers have no simple way to know whether the backup in a tenant’s garage still works,” an A Quality Garage Door spokesperson said. “Shutoffs can arrive with little warning during Santa Ana winds. Our goal is to test every opener with the power off, so owners and tenants know where each unit stands before fire season.”
Each visit begins with the opener unplugged to test the battery backup. The company’s technicians then confirm whether the opener was installed on or after July 1, 2019, test the manual emergency release, and run the auto reverse and photo eye tests. Managers receive results per unit, with a quote for anything that fails.
