As the Inland Empire and Coachella Valley head into another dry season, a less obvious fire risk is appearing under rooftop solar panels: pigeons nesting in the sheltered gap between panels and the roof. Local handyman company Ryan’s Home Services says it has seen a clear increase in calls for solar panel bird proofing this year as homeowners discover nests, droppings, and dry debris packed against wiring and roof surfaces.
The warm climate allows pigeons to nest year-round, and the shaded space under most residential solar arrays provides ideal cover. Once a pair settles in, they often return and raise multiple broods, quickly building up dry nesting material. In a region already dealing with high wildfire risk and Santa Ana winds, that material can become additional fuel sitting close to electrical components.

“People install solar to save money and reduce their risk, but a lot of them don’t realize the space under the panels can turn into a nesting spot,” said Ryan, founder of Ryan’s Home Services and a former police officer. “We’ve pulled out nests, feathers, and droppings from under systems all over Beaumont, Banning, Palm Desert, and the surrounding areas. Cleaning it out and sealing the perimeter with mesh stops the problem and reduces the fuel load that can build up.”
Ryan’s Home Services installs bird-proof mesh around the edges of solar arrays, attached to the panel frames rather than the roof, and includes full nest and debris removal. The company notes the issue is common enough that it now regularly pairs bird proofing with solar panel cleaning for customers who want both the mess removed and the panels perform better.
Homeowners are advised to watch for signs such as birds repeatedly flying under the panels, visible droppings or nesting material along the edges, or unexplained drops in solar production. Addressing the problem early is typically simpler and less expensive than waiting until debris has accumulated or wiring has been affected.
Ryan’s Home Services is offering a free visual inspection checklist for solar panel bird activity to local homeowners. Interested residents can request it by calling (951) 392-4351 or visiting ryanshomeservices.com.
