Genius Marketing, a Vancouver, Washington marketing agency, today released the first Clark County AI Index, a study of which local businesses AI tools recommend when customers ask for help.
The agency asked ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity the same 198 local questions, such as "Who is the best plumber in Camas, WA?", across 11 industries and six Clark County cities. That produced 594 answers.
Key findings:
• In law firms, one business appeared in 56% of the answers (30 of 54). In roofing, it was 52% (28 of 54).
• In dental and chiropractic, the most-named business appeared in only 17% and 19% of answers. For medical practices, the answers named 97 different businesses.
• The three tools rarely agreed. All three named the same first business in 11 of 198 questions, about 6%.
• Perplexity usually named one or two businesses per answer, while ChatGPT and Gemini named about six.
• Google, Yelp and the Better Business Bureau were among the sites AI cited most.
"People used to ask a neighbor who they would call. Now many of them ask an AI tool, and it often names only a few businesses," said Spencer Hart, founder of Genius Marketing. "We wanted local owners to see what those answers actually look like."
The study is one month of data from three AI tools, collected through their developer interfaces, so results can differ slightly from what a person sees in an app. The report does not name individual businesses. The full method and results by industry are at https://geniusmarketingco.com/clark-county-ai-index/, and a plain-language summary for business owners is at https://geniusmarketingco.com/what-ai-recommends-clark-county-businesses/.
Genius Marketing recommends that business owners keep their business information consistent across Google and directories, collect genuine reviews on more than one site, answer customers' questions on their websites and earn mentions from trusted local sources. No one can guarantee a mention in an AI tool.
