New database treats the U.S. and European versions of a product as what they are: different formulas.
-- BeautySnob (beautysnob.com), an independent beauty ingredient safety database, today announced its platform now covers tens of thousands of scored products and more than 30,000 indexed ingredients across hundreds of skincare, makeup, hair care, body care and fragrance brands, with new brands added every week.
Unlike existing ingredient checkers, BeautySnob scores each product separately for every market it is sold in. A moisturizer sold in the United States and the "same" moisturizer sold in Spain often carry different formulas, because regulations, suppliers and labeling rules differ by region. BeautySnob sources ingredient lists directly from each brand's official local website, so shoppers see the formula they will actually buy. A shopper in Madrid and a shopper in New York can look up the same product name and see two different scores, each reflecting the formula sold in their own country. The platform currently covers the U.S. and Spanish markets, with further European markets planned.
Every product receives two scores. The Clinical Score is a deterministic, rules-based assessment that weighs each ingredient's hazard rating by its position in the formula, exposure route (leave-on, rinse-off, spray, powder or oral) and EU regulatory status. The Formulator Score adds a written assessment of the overall formulation, flagging concerns such as fragrance allergens, restricted ingredients and preservative systems in plain language. Together, the two scores give shoppers both a reproducible number and the reasoning behind it.
The ingredient library flags more than 2,000 ingredients as hazardous, including substances banned or restricted under the EU Cosmetics Regulation, the U.S. FDA's list of prohibited and restricted cosmetic ingredients and Health Canada's Cosmetic Ingredient Hotlist, along with the declarable EU fragrance allergens and ingredients with documented sensitization or reproductive-toxicity concerns.
"Most ingredient tools assume a product is identical everywhere in the world. It isn't," said a BeautySnob spokesperson. "We wanted a tool that shows people the formula on the shelf in front of them, scored with a method they can read and question." BeautySnob is free to use.
