Addressing how much capital is appropriate for iron condor trading, ACondor’s newly announced automated options software gives experienced tastytrade users configurable risk limits and position-sizing rules to help structure their approach.

The amount of capital needed for an options strategy depends not only on the structure of the trade but also on the investor’s financial circumstances and ability to absorb losses, explains ACondor. The latest guidance from the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission advises investors to understand the risks of options and consider whether they can bear potential losses before trading. For iron condors, this makes it important to assess maximum potential loss, broker buying-power requirements and the proportion of an account exposed to each position.
An iron condor combines a put credit spread and a call credit spread, with long options defining the maximum potential loss at expiration. ACondor states that the buying power required depends on factors including spread width, the credit received, broker requirements and the number of contracts. While a single position may fit a relatively small account, opening too many positions can concentrate exposure and leave insufficient capital available to manage changing market conditions.
ACondor explains that the new software has no universal minimum account requirement, but its default settings provide a practical reference point. The default risk cap is $700 per trade, while percentage-based sizing targets 2% of net liquidation value per position. Therefore, an account of approximately $35,000 aligns those two defaults. Traders using smaller accounts need to lower the per-trade risk cap to keep an individual loss from representing too large a share of their capital.
The software also applies allocation limits and checks buying power before entering positions. Its default allocation cap starts at 10% of net liquidation value, with up to 20 concurrent positions permitted. These controls are intended to help traders apply consistent sizing rules rather than make decisions based solely on the capital available for a single trade.
